Funeral services for Agatha "Aggie" Marie (Winkels) Kern, age 85, of Perham, MN, formerly of Fergus Falls, and Wadena, MN, will be Monday, January 3, 2005, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Perham, beginning at 11 a.m., with Reverend David Rieder officiating. Burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery, Wadena. Visitation at Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, is from 4-8 p.m., Sunday, January 2, 2005, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Aggie died at the Perham Memorial Nursing Home, Wednesday, December 29, 2004.
Aggie was born May 22, 1919, to Mathias J. and Seraphine (Silbernagel) Winkels, of Perham MN. She was baptized and confirmed at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Dent, MN. After school graduation, she worked for five years at the local Drug Store in Perham.
On June 9, 1942, Aggie was united in marriage to Arnold A. Kern at the Sacred Heart Church in Dent. To this marriage, six children were born. They made their first home in Duluth, MN, where her husband worked at a defense plant. In 1944, they moved to Little Falls, MN, and, in 1946, they moved to Fergus Falls where they bought a home and raised their family. In 1967, they moved to Wadena, MN, where Aggie went to work at the local Bakery and Coffee Shop. In 1992, Aggie retired and moved to Perham, MN, to be near her brothers and sisters, where she lived until the time of her death.
Aggie was a devoted mother and homemaker. She loved her children and her church where she belonged to Christian Mothers and Catholic Daughters. Her strong faith in God helped her during difficult times in her life.
Surviving Aggie are her children, Victor (Kay) Kern, of Oklahoma City, OK, Patricia (David) Melby, of North Branch, MN, Geri (Larry) Priest, of Tucson, AZ, Alan (Lauren) Kern, of Prescott Valley, AZ and Randy (Nellie) Kern, of Prescott, AZ; grandchildren, Tony and Nicky Kern, Scott, Martin, and Timothy Melby, Suzanne, Bethany and John Priest, Daniel, Rachael, Abby and Evangeline Kern; nine great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Kern, of Ottertail, MN; sisters, Irene Buechler, of Perham, MN and Margaret Ungari, of California; brothers, twin Alois (Rose) Winkels, of Ottertail, MN, Matt (Margaret) Winkels, of Perham, MN, and Tom (Joan Winkels, of Minneapolis, MN; sister-in-law, Minnie Winkels, of Alexandria, MN as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Preceding Aggie in death were her parents; husband Arnold, on August 13, 1973; her second-born son, Loren, on September 24, 1992; five sisters (one infant) and seven brothers.
Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society.
