Bertha Brase

February 4, 1900 — September 4, 2004

Bertha L. Brase, age 104, longtime resident of Perham, MN, died Saturday, September 4, 2004, at the Perham Memorial Home. Funeral services will be Friday, September 10, 2004, beginning at 11:00 a.m., at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Perham, with Reverend Terry Grzybowski officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation at Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, is from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, September 9, 2004 as well as one hour prior to the funeral at the church.



Bertha Leona Brase, daughter of Fred and Anna (Praeuner) Bierman, was born February 4, 1900, on a farm near Battle Creek, Nebraska. She was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek and attended Parochial School there until her confirmation at age 13. Bertha then attended public school in Battle Creek for two years. This farm community was her home during her earlier life.



After completing school, Bertha worked in a grocery store and took sewing lessons. She drove back and forth from the farm with a horse and buggy. Later, her father taught her how to drive the car. Bertha was an excellent seamstress, sewing her own clothes and some of her children's. World War I began when Bertha was 18 years old. During the war, many folks were stricken with influenza which was severe but she and her family escaped the epidemic.



Bertha was united in marriage to Herbert C. Brase on July 22, 1923, in Battle Creek, at St. John's Lutheran Church. They moved to Perham, MN, where her husband taught school at St. Paul's Lutheran School from 1920-1946. He preceded her in death on October 10, 1990. Bertha continued to reside in her home in Perham until she entered the nursing home in August 1995.



Bertha loved her Lord and Savior and reflected it in her dedication to her family, friends, and church. She enjoyed laughing and visiting with the people she loved. Bertha was highly respected by everyone who knew her. Her memory will be cherished by many.



Surviving Bertha are three sons, Marven (Vlasta), Fairfax, IA, Arland (Leanda), Detroit Lakes, MN, and Arvet (Aletha), Bellevue, WA; one daughter, Arlene (Eugene) Holst, St. Paul, MN; eleven grandchildren, Jon (Jody) Brase, Tucson, AZ, Jill (Tom) Burk, Bussey, IA, Jim Brase, Fairfax, IA, Jane (Steve) Riemenschneider, Stillwater, MN, Kevin (Vicki) Holst, Cottage Grove, MN, Glen (Deb) Brase, Alexandria, MN, Terry Lea (Terry) Mastel, Mandan, ND, Nancy (Jeff) Sornsin, Fargo, ND, Dane Brase, Lino Lakes, MN, Beth (Dan) Lovitt, Redmond, WA, and Tara (Joseph) Polito, Bellevue, WA; 18 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.



Preceding Bertha in death, in addition to her husband, were her parents and two brothers, Erich and Herb Bierman.
