James Schmidt

James E. Schmidt, age 78, of Perham, MN, died Monday, July 2, 2007, at MeritCare Health Systems, Fargo, ND. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 7, 2007, at 11:00 am at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Perham, with Reverend Terry Grzybowski officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, July 6, at Schoeneberger Funeral Home from 4:00 - 8:00 pm with a prayer service at 7:00 pm and one hour prior to services at the church.



James was born July 3, 1928, in Crookston, MN, the son of Richard and Anne (Dragseth) Schmidt. He attended Perham public schools graduating in 1946. James served in the US Army from 1951-53 spending 1952 in France. While in France he traveled to Lourdes in the Pyrenees Mountains in Southern France, Mont St. Michele off the Normandy Coast and the Fairy Castle of King Ludwig in the Bavarian Alps. Upon returning to Perham, he went to work with his father at Schmidt Concrete Products. On December 30, 1956, he married Eileen Johnson and together they had three sons. James eventually took over as owner-operator of Schmidt Concrete Products and closed the business in 1967 having decided not to expand. He moved on and became foreman for Potter Material, a block plant, in Indianapolis, IN, in 1968-69. In 1970 he was hired by Youngs Jobbing House, Perham, as a salesman where he worked until retirement in 1991. James had been very active at St. Paul's Lutheran Church having served as Vice-Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer. He was also a volunteer with the police reserve. James loved trains, crosswords, and soduko puzzles. He also enjoyed family gatherings where he would entertain everyone with his many stories.



James is survived by his wife, Eileen, Perham, MN; sons, Brent (Laurie) Schmidt, Park Rapids, MN; Brad (Mary) Schmidt, Perham, MN; and Todd (Julie) Schmidt, Glenco, MN; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Jason, Ashley, Garrett, Amanda, and Nathan; and a sister, Sara Canada, Perham, MN.
