On September 12, 1948, Sherman was united in marriage to Alta Svalen, at McIntosh, MN. After their marriage, they lived in Fargo, ND, where Sherman continued his education at North Dakota Agricultural College and graduated with a B.S. degree in 1951. He then accepted a job as County Extension Agent for Red Lake County, and he and Alta lived in Red Lake Falls, MN, from 1951 to 1954. Sherman came to Perham as the East Otter Tail County Extension Agent in September 1954 until 1966. From 1967 until retirement in 1980, he served with the University of Minnesota Extension Office as Coordinator of Concerted Services and Supervisor of the Small Farmer Aides project.

Sherman planted evergreens on land in Perham Township, starting in the early 60's. In 1969, he started wholesaling Christmas trees and in 1971, he and Alta started a "choose and cut your own Christmas tree" operation. Mandt Tree Farm became known in a 65-mile radius of Perham. Sherman kept busy with the tree business until "retirement" in 2002.
