She was diagnosed with cancer in October 2003. Her last months were filled with visits, cards, letters, and flowers from the many people whose lived she had touched.

Thelma was born on September 30, 1915, the youngest of five daughters of William and Ida (Hyrnkangas) Ranta. She grew up and attended school in New York Mills, MN. Following graduation, she worked in Fergus Falls, MN and the Iron Range area as well as Milwaukee, WI. Thelma returned to New York Mills in 1940 and on November 13, 1940, married Aloysuis "Wishy" Hassler. They bought a farm near Perham and lived there together for forty years. After Wishy's death in 1980, Thelma remained on the farm until moving into an apartment in Perham in 1990.

Thelma was active in St. Henry's Christian Mothers, MCCL, and over the years, volunteered many hours at the nursing home and the museum. She had a lifelong love of reading and often said she had read every book in the Perham Library. Thelma also loved her Monday card group, family trips, her daily crossword puzzle, writing letters and afternoon coffee with friends. Thelma's life was an example of Christian faith and hope. It was this deep faith that strengthened her and enabled her family to joyfully give her back to Jesus.

Surviving Thelma are her daughters, Alice Sundeen, of Lakeville, MN, Cathy (John) Begandy, of Tucson, AZ, Polly (Orville) Solberg, of Hot Springs, MT, Mary (Phil) Southwick, of Lonsdale, MN and Celie (Dennis) Soderstrom, of Perham, MN; grandchildren, Mike and Brad Mares, Misty and Jessie Olson, Amy Gruber, Jenny Schmitz, Adam and Laura Southwick, Phil Hastings, Erin Biksen, Heather Aufdenkamp, and Tyler and Cody Soderstrom; eleven great-grandchildren and one sister, Ilona Ranta, of Chisholm, MN.
