Cordes Engel

June 4, 1924 — April 17, 2015

Cordes Walter Engel, age 90, passed away Friday, April 17, 2015, at Perham Living, where he lived for the past seven years.

Cordes was born on a farm in Dent, MN, on June 4, 1924. He attended rural grade school, 'walking uphill both ways' and graduated from Perham High School. In those days, 'everything was 5 cents'. Cordes enlisted in the US Navy and served on a mine sweeper in the Pacific from 1944-46.

On May 30, 1953, Cordes married Lorraine Reller, and together they raised six children. Cordes's working career began at Ebersviller's in Pelican Rapids, then Silverline in Moorhead before becoming Service Manager at Arctic Cat Enterprises in Thief River Falls. After retiring in 1987, Cordes and Lorraine returned to Star Lake where they spent many memorable years fishing and going for coffee with friends and neighbors.

Cordes loved to fish, hunt, watch Twins baseball and do crossword puzzles. He took pride in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren, and enjoyed sharing his love of fishing with them. On weekends, he would wake up the family calling 'daylight in the swamp'! He was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Dora.

Cordes is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Hatti Engel; his two sisters, Lanetta Engel and Verna (Phil) Clark; and his oldest daughter, Barbara (Ed) Lodin. He is lovingly survived by his wife, Lorraine; their son, Bruce; daughters, Diane (Bill) Gusa, Joan (Paul) Roemer, Roberta (Dennis) Welgraven and Jackie Engel; and ten grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 23 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Schoeneberger Funeral Home in Perham. Visitation will resume on Friday, April 24 beginning at 10:00 a.m. followed by the memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Perham. Burial will be held in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Dent, MN.
