Elaine Betty Johnson Sieling Matz went to live with her Lord and Savior on June 24, 2022 .
Elaine was born on July 29, 1923, to Henry and Anna (Martin) Johnson. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Perham, MN. Elaine attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School from first grade through 8th grade. After graduating from Perham High School in 1941, Elaine furthered her education at Gustavus Adolphus College graduating with a teaching degree.
Elaine’s teaching career saw her teaching in Duluth and Wadena, before moving back to teach at Perham High School for 26 years. In her career, she taught Phy Ed, English, Business, Health Occupations, and was the advisor of the school paper, the Jackets Journal. After retiring from teaching, Elaine worked as a receptionist for Schoeneberger Funeral Home.
On February 2, 1947, Elaine married Arlin Sieling. They had five children. Arlin and Elaine spent many hours watching their children’s sporting activities. Arlin passed away in 1975.
On July 18, 1987, Elaine married Lyle Matz. Lyle and Elaine loved to spend time watching their grandchildren's activities, bowling, and traveling. Lyle passed away in 1997.
Elaine was involved in many church activities including choir and LWML. Before moving into Briarwood, Elaine lived in the house she and Arlin built outside of Perham where she enjoyed taking care of the lawn and watching the wildlife. Elaine loved to bowl. Some years she bowled in three different bowling leagues.
Elaine is survived by her children: Bonnie (Del) Stohs, Bob (Debra) Sieling, John (Annette) Sieling, Daniel (Lori) Sieling, Carol (Tom) Chorley. 13 grandchildren: Seth Stohs, Justin Stohs, Heather Stohs, Jennifer (Jason) Bain, Staci (Shawn) Kuhnke, Sarah (Jake) Wilhelmi, Jason (Kasi) Sieling, Christopher (Amanda) Sieling, Kerry Sieling, Naomi (Bret) Schuler, Isaac (Acacia) Sieling, Jared (Erin) Sieling, Hannah (Jake) Rosholt, and 31 great-grandchildren. She is survived by sisters-in-law Loretta Sieling and Caroline Walz, and brother-in-law Norman Sieling, along with many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are husband Arlin, husband Lyle, her parents: Henry & Anna Johnson, her sister and brother-in-law Agnes & Art Rosen, her brother and sister-in-law Rupert & Esther Johnson, brothers-in-law: Floyd Sieling, Herb Schmidt, Al Walz, and sisters-in-law Norleen Schmidt and Linnea Sieling.
Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11:00 on Monday, June 27, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Perham. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
