November 13, 1918 — May 18, 2013

Eleanor Eckstrom, age 94 of Perham, Minnesota died Saturday, May 18, 2013 at Perham Living. A funeral mass and celebration of her life will be held Tuesday, May 21 at 11:00 AM at the Perham Living chapel with Father Matt Kuhn as celebrant. Eleanor Elizabeth Langer was born November 13, 1918 to Paul and Katherine (Kunze) Langer in Dazey, North Dakota. In 1936 the family moved to Bluffton, Minnesota where they made their home.

Ellie had an independent and adventurous spirit and moved to the West coast early in her life. She lived in Seattle, Washington for a time and then made her way to her beloved Alaska in 1952. It was there she made her home for 53 years. On October 28, 1967 she married Tim W. Eckstrom. She worked as a clerk at Railway Express and also in retail sales at Wiona's Gift Shop.

Ellie was a member of the Anchorage Emblem Club, the VFW Auxillary, Elks, and American Legion. She was a member of Holy Family Cathedral in Anchorage and St Henry's Catholic Church in Perham. Her faith was very important to her and she had devotion to the rosary and to prayer.

In 2005, she moved to Minnesota to be closer to her family, and in 2011, she moved to the Harvest Glen community of Perham Living. She was cared for with kindness and grace by Perham Living staff and also received hospice care from Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Ellie was a true pioneer and a woman ahead of her time. She loved her adopted state of Alaska with a passion. She adored anything and everything Alaskan - its history, its native people, and its art - but especially the state's mountains and its sunsets. She loved to travel, do crossword puzzles, read, bowl, and ski. She was an avid collector of Alaskan art. She was generous and kind to her family and friends and will be remembered for her wit, her sense of humor, and the value she placed on education and children.

Preceding her in death are her parents, her husband Tim, brothers John and Ray Langer, sisters Emma Kupfer, Frances Cuddy, Rosella Mays, and baby sister Agnes.

She is survived by her sisters Magdalene Wallgren of Fergus Falls, Minnesota and Marion Bressi of St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews across the country whom she loved - especially her special angel Laurie Krueger.
