Gerrit Wierbos

April 1, 1958 — January 9, 2018

Gerrit Jan Wierbos Sr. was born in Zuidwolde, Netherlands to Gosum and Jantje (Steenbergen) Wierbos on April 1, 1958. He was the fourth of five children and they all grew up on their family farm. Gerrit attended school at Techschod-Hoogeve, Netherlands. He went on to serve in the Royal Dutch Air Force. He was stationed in Germany patrolling the Berlin Wall from 1977-1979. In 1983, Gerrit enrolled as a student in an agriculture exchange program traveling to India, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Singapore and Fiji (his favorite spot). In 1988, he married and settled in Otter Tail County, Minnesota.

He worked as a farmer for several years until starting his own business, Lucky Cow Hoof Trimming, in the late 90’s. Cows were truly lucky to have Gerrit around. Many times, he would bring injured calves home to provide them with extra care. Raising calves was a passion for him. Bringing a new baby home always put a smile on his face.

He made an impact on everyone he met. He made lifelong friends with fellow farmers, poker players, and countless others. Gerrit loved being “Papa G” to his children and grandchildren. His sense of humor, kindness and wisdom will be remembered by his children Hannah (James), Natalie (Cody), Julie, Gerrit Jr., Alison and Christina and his grandchildren Elizabeth, Lucas, William and Jonah, and Finlee. He will also be remembered by Sheila Hanson, mother of his children; his sister Hennie; his brothers Wessel (Anelia), Henk (Harma) and Bertus (Chien); along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Gerrit passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 in his home surrounded by his family after a 14-month battle against cancer. He was 59 years young.

Preceding Gerrit in death were his parents.

Visitation will be from 12:00-1:00 p.m. followed by the memorial service at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at Schoeneberger Funeral & Cremation Service. Lunch and fellowship will follow the service.
