Hugh W. Smith, age 91, of Perham, MN, died February 1, 2011 at the Elders' Home in New York Mills, MN.
Hugh was born June 8, 1919, near Richville, MN, the son of William and Annie (Bullock) Smith. Before joining the US Army in 1941, Hugh joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1945 and came home to farm. On December 3, 1947, he was united in marriage to Ethel Mizener. Hugh began working for the Erie Mining Company in 1956 as a welder and retired in 1977.
Hugh was the oldest charter member of the Perham VFW Post and he was also a member of the Dent American Legion. "If you knew him, he probably fixed something for you."
Hugh is survived by his wife, Ethel, Perham, MN; daughter, Sharon Karger, Richville, MN; two sons, Hugh Smith Jr., Hoyt Lakes, MN; and James Smith, Phoenix, AZ; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and two sisters, Shirley Stahl, Duluth, MN; and Beverly Kanga, Perham, MN.
Preceding Hugh in death are his parents; four brothers; three sisters; grandson, Bradley Smith; and daughter-in-law, Pat Smith.
