James Mattfeld

December 19, 1937 — November 16, 2023

Perham

James (Jim) August Mattfeld, died on November 16, 2023, at Perham Living in Perham, MN, under the care of hospice and surrounded by loved ones.

Jim, known for his playful sarcasm, was born on December 19, 1937, in Perham, MN to August and Theresa (Schultz) Mattfeld. He was one of five children. Jim attended country school until the eighth grade, then later graduated from Perham High School, Class of 1955.

After high school, Jim attended basic training in Fort Leonard Wood, MO. When he returned home, he married Barbara (Barb) Hendrickson on November 29th, 1958 and moved onto the family farm in rural Perham, MN, where they raised four children, Mark, Terri, Rhonda, and Eric. While the children grew up, Jim farmed, sold insurance, owned a custom spraying and feed grinding business, and worked for Offutt for 10 years. After retirement, Jim and Barb moved from the farm into a home closer to town.

Jim enjoyed many hobbies such as hunting, fishing, raising pheasants, telling stories of his past, feeding the critters outside his window, and playing pranks on anyone who could handle a joke. His favorite pastime of all was spending time with his seven granddaughters, teaching them to ride the 3-wheeler, icefish, and trap pocket gophers. He stayed in touch with them as they grew older by calling or sending letters in the mail. The girls always used caution when opening packages from Jim.

Jim came to know the Lord in his early thirties at a Rex Humbard crusade and was later baptized at First Baptist Church in Frazee, MN, where he and Barb attended. Jim had a giving heart, he loved assisting his neighbors in their projects and being there for them in times of need. Jim always relied on his foundation with Christ to help him through life.

Jim is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Mattfeld; mother and father, August & Theresa Mattfeld; and three siblings, Margaret Scheidecker, LaVerne Rued, and Irene Bonderenko.

His wonderful life will forever be cherished by one surviving brother, Gerald Mattfeld of Perham, MN; four children and their spouses, Mark & Jackie Mattfeld of Lake Park, MN, Terri & Lee Marshall of Valley City, ND, Rhonda Kading of Brooklyn Center, MN, Eric & Dawn Mattfeld of Sioux Falls, SD; seven granddaughters; six great grandchildren; four great granddaughters and two on the way.
