Leona Lydia Augusta (Huwe) Matz, 96, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and child of God, died peacefully on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at the Perham Living Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 20 at 11 AM, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Corliss Township, Perham, with Pastor Phil Booe officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held in the Perham Living Chapel, Friday, July 19 from 5-7 PM with prayer service at 6:30.
Leona was born March 26, 1917, in Butler Township, to Albert and Emma (Janke) Huwe. She was baptized on April 22, 1917, confirmed on April 27, 1930 and married at St. John's Lutheran Church, Corliss Township. Leona grew up on the family farm in Butler Township and attended country school. Leona married Edwin Matz on May 19, 1942. They farmed in Pine Lake Township until 1980. After retirement, Edwin and Leona built a new home and moved to Perham in 1981. They enjoyed many family dinners and celebrations in this home and continued to enjoy entertaining friends there too. After Edwin passed away on November 24, 1989, Leona remained in this home until 2011 when she was admitted into Perham Living.
Leona always enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was an active member of St John's Corliss and a member of the Ladies Aid for many years. Leona enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens, quilting and sewing, fish fries, playing cards, canning, and baking - especially cookies and caramel rolls for ever-welcome visitors.
Edwin and Leona were blessed with five children, Gayle (Richard) Boehnke of Perham, Roger and June (Dan) Abrahams of Detroit Lakes, Donna (Don) Meyer of Perham, and Sandy Armendariz of Minneapolis; 14 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Leona's heart was filled with joy upon the arrival of each and every child.
Leona is survived by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchild; brothers, Eldor (Margaret) Huwe, of Menahga, MN, Arnold (Eleanor) Huwe, and Menahga, MN, and Albert Jr. (Violet) Huwe of New York Mills, MN; her sisters-in-law, Jeanette (Norman) Huwe, Emma Rosen, and Elsie (Roy) Martin, all of Perham, MN; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Leona in death are her parents; husband, Edwin Matz; grandson, Nathan Norman Meyer; brothers, Raymond, Kenneth and Norman Huwe; sisters, Thelma (Kearney) Dickson and Helen (Marvin) Anhorn; and several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
