Lois Helm, age 91, of Perham, Minnesota formerly of Bemidji, Minnesota died Wednesday, November 21, 2012 in her home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Lois was born June 7, 1921, Tuesday, "Child of Grace", to Roy and Ida (Nelson) Nordholm in Harcourt, Iowa. She was christened Lois Jean Evangeline, a traditional Swedish naming for the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. She later changed her last name to Boyd, after her mother married Jay Boyd. After graduating from Bemidji High School in 1940, Lois attended Bemidji Teacher's College.
Lois married Leonard Helm on her 21st birthday on June 7, 1942 in Bemidji, Minnesota. World War II had started, so the young couple moved to Portland, Oregon. Related to her husband's career, they lived in several communities, retiring in Bemidji in the 1980's.
Lois deeply loved spending time with her family and took pride in her children's and grandchildren's accomplishments. She loved children. When her own children were grown, she taught Sunday school in several communities, always taking pride in creating thoughtful lessons. She enjoyed traveling to many countries including China, Australia, New Zealand, England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, Norway, and Sweden. She also toured the United States and Canada in their RV.
In her leisure time she loved playing and winning at Bingo and playing cribbage with her husband. A handiwork project was always in progress such as crocheting lace for pillowcases and numerous Afghans – enough for all her children and grandchildren. She took pride in baking pies, bread, and rolls, as well as canning pickles, horseradish, fruits, and vegetables. Until recently, Lois maintained a vegetable garden bordered by flowers (Four O' Clocks, Roses, and Marigolds): a spot of beauty admired by her neighbors.
Preceding Lois in death are her parents; husband, Leonard; sisters, Louise Gray and Jacqueline Galloway; and a brother, Robert Boyd.
