Mabel Margaret (Swanson) Olson of Perham was born on March 12, 1912, on a farm near Thief River Falls, Minnesota, daughter of John and Anna Swanson. After graduating from Lincoln High School and teacher's training in Thief River Falls, Mabel taught in several one-room country schools near Battle Lake, Goodridge, and Frazee.
She married Floyd B. Olson on August 3, 1933. In their 65 years of marriage, they lived in a number of towns in Minnesota and California, including Goodridge, Thief River Falls, Detroit Lakes, San Diego, Fresno, Worthington, Minneapolis, and Paynesville before retiring to Marion Lake outside of Perham, where they lived for twenty years.
After teaching, Mabel spent the rest of her career as a bookkeeper, retiring from a firm where she helped audit small businesses.
Mabel and Floyd were members of Calvary Lutheran Church. Mabel was also a member of the Olive Branch Chapter #14 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Detroit Lakes since 1951.
Surviving Mabel are one son, Thomas Olson of Norwalk, California (and his special friend Carmen Sanders); two daughters, Jane Bonander (Richard Noer) of New Brighton, and Suellen (Carl) Rundquist of Arden Hills; one sister, Emma Kassa of Willmar and two brothers, Ernest Swanson of Goodridge and John (LaVonne) Swanson of Burnsville; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mabel died on October 10, 2013 at the age of 101. A memorial service will be held at Calvary Lutheran Church on October 28, 2013 at 11:30 AM. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the memorial service at the church.
