Mark "Vandy" VandenBerghe
May 14, 1964 - June 1, 2025
Mark VandenBerghe, 61, of Perham, MN, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born on May 14, 1964, in Wadena, MN, Mark lived a life rooted in service, adventure, and love. He was a proud firefighter for the Eden Prairie Fire Department for 34 years (1988-2022), honorably wearing badge #85 and retired as Captain. His dedication and leadership earned him the honor of Firefighter of the Year in 2017, a recognition that symbolized the heart and grit he brought to every shift. He also worked with Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT), extending his commitment to helping others on a national scale. Mark retired from the fire service in 2022, leaving behind a legacy of courage, compassion, and camaraderie.
To his family, Mark was more than a hero in uniform, he was the cool dad, the one who could hang with the kids, crack a joke, offer steady advice, and who never missed a sporting event. Whether cheering on his daughter Alison's football teams from the stands or catching a Vikings game with his son Brady and friends, he brought the same energy and loyalty to his family that he gave to his community.
Mark found joy in the simple things, like riding his Harley or casting a line on camping and fishing trips. He was the kind of person who made everyone feel welcome, known for his big heart, quick wit, and a laugh that could light up a room.
He is survived by his son, Brady (Erin) VandenBerghe; daughter, Alison VandenBerghe; father, Robert VandenBerghe; brothers, Mike VandenBerghe, Myron VandenBerghe, and Ronald VandenBerghe; stepbrother, Tony (Bobbi) Jones; stepsister, Terri (Jay) Fagerman; and many loving extended family members and lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife and best friend, Nancy VandenBerghe; stepmother, Jeanette VandenBerghe; and grandparents Austin and Mary VandenBerghe.
Mark’s services will be held on Monday June 9, 2025, at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Eden Prairie, MN. Visitation with the family will begin at 1:00 p.m. followed by the Memorial Service at 2:00.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to MnFire: https://mnfireinitiative.com/ways-to-help/#donate
Though our hearts are heavy, we take comfort knowing that Mark is reunited with Nancy, riding free and watching over us all.
