Mary Hohenstein

January 14, 1928 — January 23, 2012

Mary Ann Hohenstein, age 84 of Dent, MN made her final journey to our Lord while in the company of family at her home on Monday January 23, 2012, with comfort care provided by Lakeland Hospice of Fergus Falls, MN.
Mary was born Mary Ann O'Neill on January 14, 1928, in Waterbury, Nebraska, to Leonard and Fern (Murray) O'Neill. She attended South Sioux City Public High School in South Sioux, NE. She worked as a secretary for the Swiss Packing Company of Sioux City, IA; years later as a waitress/hostess and even as your local Avon Lady. Her favorite occupation, though, was Grandmother and Mother. Mary was united in marriage with Donald E. Hohenstein, on July 14, 1951, at St. Michaels Catholic Church, South Sioux City, NE. The couple lived in Sacramento, CA and Oklahoma City, OK while Dad was in the Air Force. They moved back to South Sioux City, NE, and started their family. Three of their eight children were born there. Around 1956, the family moved to their current home on Dead Lake near Dent, MN, and the five remaining children came thereafter.
Mary was a loving mother and grandmother who loved spending time with family, friends, and especially grandchildren. She was active in Christian Mothers and Homemakers and looked forward to their get-togethers. She loved doing arts and crafts with friends and family. She also loved games and was always up for "Yahtzee". On the week-ends, years ago, she could often be seen cutting the rug with dad (she loved ball room dancing) and it was often a family affair. Being particularly fond of her Irish heritage, she would often being seen wearing green on St. Patty's Day. It was often commented on by her children and to their amusement when it came to pull tabs she had the luck of the Irish. Mom always looked forward to an occasional casino outing and a couple of birthdays were celebrated that way. You name it, any kind of social activity, mom was always ready to participate and now her absence will be duly felt.
Mary is survived by four daughters Mary Gwyn (Lyle) Wiebe of Brandon, MN, Debra (Mike) Benson of Moorhead, MN, Paula (Dwayne) Gladback of Dent, MN, Pamela Hohenstein of Dent, MN and four sons Donald (Joanne) Hohenstein of Mankato, MN, Daniel (Janet) Hohenstein of Glyndon, MN, Vincent (Dana) Hohenstein of Dent, MN, Victor Hohenstein of Dent, MN. She is also survived by one sister Catherine (Paul) Marron of Cheyenne, WY; eighteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother Bernard (Leona) O'Neil of Cheyenne, WY, sister-in-law and brother-in-law.
