December 19, 1927 — June 29, 2016

Sadie (Cerkowniak) Kushinski age 88 of Detroit Lakes, MN died June 29, 2016 in Essentia Health – Oak Crossing after a battle with cancer.

Sadie was born on December 19, 1927 to William and Lena (Domenko) Cerkowniak in Caribou, MN. Sadie was one of 12 children. She met Martin Kushinski and the couple was married May 9, 1946 in Hallock, MN. They made their home in the Hallock area for several years where their only child Jim was born. They moved to East Grand Forks in 1957 where they remained until Martin's death in 1997.

Sadie worked at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home for 14 years as a laundry supervisor, retiring in 1989. Sadie loved to plant a very large garden as well as many flowers. Shortly after Martin's death Sadie was forced from her home by the flood of the century. She went on to live in Fargo, Perham and finally Detroit Lakes. While living in Fargo, Sadie donated numerous hours of her time as a senior volunteer at the Dakota Boys Ranch store where she was named volunteer of the year in 1999.

Surviving Sadie is her son Jim (Nancy) Kushinski; her grandchildren Sherry Kushinski and Curtis (Vanessa) Kushinski; her great-grandchildren Zoe and Tess; and her sisters Helen and Jennie.

Preceding Sadie in death were her parents; her husband Martin; brothers Emil, John, Nick and Pete; and her sisters Annie, Olga, Ria, Kate and Mary.

Sadie has donated her body to the University of North Dakota School of Medicine in hope that somebody's life might be saved because of her donation.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the St. Henry's Catholic Church Renovation Account in Perham.

Sadie's family is grateful to the staff at the Lincoln Park Assisted Living, Essentia Health – Oak Crossing and Hospice of the Red River Valley for their kindness and loving care.

A memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, July 12 beginning at 11:00 a.m. at St. Henry's Catholic Church in Perham. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Lunch will follow the Mass.
