Sylvia Malcolm

January 10, 1930 — December 12, 2013

Sylvia Malcolm, age 83 of Richville, MN died on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Perham Living. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Schoeneberger Funeral Home. Burial will be held at Union Cemetery, Ottertail, MN at a later date.

Sylvia Twyla Whitney was born on January 10, 1930 in Richville, MN, the daughter of Sherman and Emma (Rickett) Whitney. She married Stanford Malcolm on October 18, 1947 in Perham, MN. She raised and sold cucumbers to buy her wedding dress. After their marriage, Stan and Sylvia farmed for some time. They then moved to several communities in Minnesota while Stan worked as an interior carpenter. They then moved back to the family farm.

Sylvia was a dedicated wife and mother. She was an extremely hard worker. No job was too big and she took over many of the farm duties to help Stan after his heart attack at a very young age. She was a respected member of the community. Sylvia had a very serious side but her humor will long be remembered by most. She will be sadly missed by not only her family but her many friends including quilting buddies and card club. Sylvia was so thankful for those who stepped up and helped her finish those last projects.

Over her lifetime, Sylvia had done many intricate handwork projects and after her retirement, she not only continued with those but also took up quilting. Her patience and attention to detail produced many beautiful quilts, many of which she shared with family and friends and will forever be cherished.

Preceding Sylvia in death are her parents; her husband, Stan; her sisters, Violet, Elsie, Leora, Ada and a baby sister; and a brother, Lyle.

Surviving Sylvia are her sons, Mitchell (Marie) and Ronnie (Derene); granddaughters, Melissa, Ashley, Jessie, Jodi and Janet; and six great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by her sisters-in-law, Ardis Erickson and Phyllis (Ken) Rust; her brother-in-law, Delbert (Loretta) Malcolm as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
