Velma Herman

March 1, 1921 — November 29, 2013

Velma was a warmhearted, caring woman who laughed easily and had a generous spirit. During her 92 years, she always opened her home for coffee, served farm dinners for dozens and constantly made new friends.

Velma (Lawrence) Herman was born to Arthur and Ella (Horman) Baumgartner March 1, 1921, in Todd County, near Wadena, MN. She attended county schools and graduated from Wadena High School in 1938. After earning her teaching credentials from the Normal Training School in Wheaton, MN, she taught school in Traverse County.

On June 2, 1940, Velma wed a Wheaton area farmer, Courtney Lawrence, in Wadena. They made their home near Graceville, MN, for 25 years. They were members of Siloah Lutheran Church. There were many happy memories including the birth and baptisms of two sons and a daughter, ball games, pancake suppers and chicken dinners. Velma was a hard-working farm wife until they moved to Moorhead, MN, in 1964. In Moorhead, she worked at Fevig Insurance Agency for 22 years. She and Courtney also built a Shaklee business until Courtney passed away from cancer in 1983.

On July 9, 1988, Velma married Deopold Herman and they made their home in Kulm, ND. They were married for 20 years until Deopold passed away at 100 years of age.

In 2010, Velma moved to Briarwood Apartments in Perham. In 2012, she moved to Perham Living and joined New Creation Lutheran Church. She played the harmonica for fellow residents at the nursing home.

Survivors include: three children Curtis (Darlene) Lawrence of Birmingham, AL; DuRae (Neil) Morkassel, Fargo, ND; and Drew (Lolly) Lawrence of Waunakee, WI; her step-son Kenneth (Olgie) Herman of Billings, MT; eight grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and four step-grandchildren and three step-great-great grandchildren. Her family also includes sisters Donna Ziegler of Perham; Ardis Nelson of Fergus Falls, MN; Elaine (Norman) Haedtke of Minnetonka, MN; and Merton (Melva Jean) Baumgartner of Battle Lake, MN. Her sister Joyce, preceded her in death.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 2, 2013 beginning at 1:30 PM at New Creation Lutheran Church in Perham. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Burial will take place at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Moorhead, MN.
