Vera Althea Meier, age 93 of Perham, passed away on February 20, 2026 at Perham Living.
She was born on October 13, 1932, in Leaf Lake Township. Her parents were the late Arthur and Leona (Hanebuth) Wiebe. Vera was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Ottertail. She attended St. John’s Lutheran School and Perham High School, graduating in 1950. Vera earned her Associate in Education at Moorhead State Teachers College in 1952, and later earned her B.S. from Moorhead State College in 1966.
Vera was united in marriage with Raymond Meier on August 14, 1954 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ottertail, and they were married for 67 years. They were blessed with two daughters, Judy and Karen. In 1957, the Meiers literally moved their house from the farm in Corliss Township to a property bordering Little Pine Lake, where they lived for 57 years.
Vera taught sixth grade in Hawley and grades 2-8 at Dist. 242 in Corliss Township before her daughters were born. After they reached school age, Vera returned to teaching at Dent Elementary and also spring primary classes at the 4-H building in Perham. In 1966, she began teaching kindergarten at Perham Elementary, retiring in 1995. Vera also taught Sunday and Bible school, and was an organist at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Corliss for many years. She enjoyed caring for her garden, quilting, and playing in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Bell Choir.
Vera is survived by her daughters, Judy Penn of Camano Island, Washington, and Karen (Terry) Steinhaus of Detroit Lakes; grandsons, Nick Steinhaus (Jodi Lovgren) of LaCrosse, Wisconsin and Chris Steinhaus (Shannon Williamson) of Waubun; great grandchildren, Amber and Jason Steinhaus; sister-in-law, Lois Wiebe. She thought of Grace, Madelyn and Clara Tangen as her “extra” grandchildren. Vera is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Preceding Vera in death were her parents, Arthur and Leona Wiebe; husband, Raymond Meier; brother, LeRoy Wiebe, and son-in-law, Philip Penn.
Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 27, 2026 at Schoeneberger Funeral & Cremation Service in Perham. Visitation will resume from 10:00-11:00 a. m. followed by the Funeral Service at 11:00 on Saturday, February 28 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Perham. Interment will be at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery at a later date.
