Duane David Strand, age 70, passed away on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at Essentia Health in Fargo, ND. Duane was born January 29, 1950 in Perham, MN to Axel and Hazel (Johnson) Strand.
Through his life, Duane held various roles in the public-school systems as well as in his community. He was a talented wearer of many hats in his career and life as a teacher, coach, councilman and president. He taught woodshop in many schools and enjoyed woodworking as a personal hobby, often crafting for family or making signs for his local community.
Duane graduated from Minnesota State University in Moorhead in 1971. After graduation he and his wife; Patricia (Stordahl) Strand joined the Peace Corps working in Fiji. Upon returning to the United States, he received his master’s degree from Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi. He later began his career holding teaching positions as a Graphic Arts or Woodshop teacher in Roseau, MN, Detroit Lakes, MN, Payson, IL, Lake Park, MN, Devils Lake, ND, Naples, FL, MSUM, and International Falls, MN.
In addition to his teaching, he served as a pillar of his community. He was the president of Lions in Vergas, MN chapter, councilmember for City of Vergas, and president of the St. Paul’s Loon Lake Church council.
The most important roles Duane held were as a husband and father. Duane and Patricia celebrated their 48-year wedding anniversary in August. Duane is survived by his wife, Patricia; his four children, Jennifer (Nicholas) Jung, Shawn Strand, Tim Strand, and David Strand; grandchildren Axel and Emerson Jung; sister Nancy Snyder; and his nieces and nephews.
Duane was preceded in death by his mother and father; brother Donald Strand; sister Carolyn Alberts; brothers-in-law Jack Snyder and Alfred Alberts; niece Tabby Belmonte; nephew Thomas Bergeron; and mother-in-law and father-in-law Emery and Opal Stordahl.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 16 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Loon Lake near Vergas, MN with walk-through visitation from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Masks and social distancing are required.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Loon Lake: Major Projects Fund.
